Keynote Address

   Speaker: Capt. Maureen Kenny  (Acting Chief of NOAA's National Ocean Service, Coast Survey Devl Lab)
   The NOAA Coast Survey Development Laboratory (CSDL) develops and improves cartographic, hydrographic, and    oceanographic systems used by the Coastal Survey and the National Ocean Service to provide products and services    for the coastal marine community, especially in the support of safe and efficient navigation and the utilization and    protection of the coast.

Morning Geo-Sessions

All morning Geo-Session presentations run concurrently throughout the morning.

  1. Student Adventures: Semester at Sea with Woods Hole   (Speaker: Dr. Gary Jaroslow)
    This presentation by the Sea Education Association at Woods Hole will show student adventures in oceanographic sampling and traditional sailing navigational techniques on board the SSV Rober C. Seamans and the SSV Corwith Cramer explorer, 134-ft Tall Ships. Future high school and college student adventures at Woods Hole MA, and in the Atlantic, Caribbean and Pacific oceans will also be discusses.

  2. "A NOAA Cartography Cruise"  (Speakers: Dr. Bobby Braswell, Dr. Wil Wollheim)
    This guided tour of the spectacular NOAA Ocaen Mapping and Exploration Exhibition on display at this year's GIS Day events will include commentary about the uses of maps by NOAA researchers and explorers.

  3. Hands on Digital Mapping and GIS:   (Speakers: Shawn Herrick and Eric Steltzer)
    This presentation will emphasize the definitions of GIS, GPS, and Remote Sensing. Students will get a hands on facilities tour of Complex Systems Research Center's well equiped GIS and remote sensing laboratory where students will be given the opportunity to try their hand at digital mapping and GIS.

  4. Careers and Education in GIS   (Speaker: ESRI)
    ESRI will show students the many opportunities available to them in the Geo-Spatial Sciences. They will see the diverse uses of the technologies and skills used by today's GIS, GPS Remote Sensing professaionals and learn what career and educational opportunities exist for them in this field.

  5. New England Regional Geo-Science College Fair:  
    (Moderators: Dr. Steve Hale and Michael Gagnon)
    A regional Geo-Science College Fair featuring representatives and curricula from several Geo-Science departments from colleges and universites from all over New England.

  1. ESRI ArcGIS 9.2 Test Drives   (Speaker: ESRI Instructor)   9:45 to 10:45 in Room 456
    Self paced hands-on user training. Users will be able to try many of the new components and features of the new ArcGIS 9.2 software after a brief instructor introduction.
