Keynote Address

  • Designing a New Visitor Map of Glacier Bay National Park, Alaska
(Speaker: United States National Park Service Senior Cartographer, Tom Patterson)

Tom Patterson will discuss the challenges of mapping the changing and diverse landscapes of one of the premier glacier parks in the US, Alaska’s Glacier Bay National Park. From retreating glaciers to the colonization of temperate rainforests, to changing coast lines due to deglaciation and post glacial rebound, the terrestrial and undersea ecosystems of this national park the size of Connecticut are constantly in flux. Tom will discuss the techniques used to map these phenomenon and display the results in a clear and concise map useful to park visitors.
    See the full abstract here.

Morning Geo-Sessions

All morning Geo-Session presentations run concurrently throughout the morning.

  1. Cartogarphic Tour of our US National Parks  (Speakers: Mark Fahnestock and Alex Prusevich)

This guided tour of the spectacular United States National Parks Cartographic Exhibition on display at this year's GIS Day events will include commentary about park attractions, geology and wildlife.

  2. Hands on Digital Mapping and GIS:   (Speakers: Fay Rubin)

This presentation will emphasize the definitions of GIS, GPS, and Remote Sensing. Students will get a hands on facilities tour of Complex Systems Research Center's well equiped GIS and remote sensing laboratory where students will be given the opportunity to try their hand at digital mapping and GIS.

  3. Careers and Education in GIS   (Speaker: ESRI Staff)

Presenters will show students the many opportunities available to them in the Geo-Spatial Sciences. They will see the diverse uses of the technologies and skills used by today's GIS, GPS Remote Sensing professaionals and learn what career and educational opportunities exist for them in this field.

  4. New England Regional Geo-Science College Fair:
(Moderators: Dr. Steve Hale and Michael Gagnon)

A regional Geo-Science College Fair featuring representatives and curricula from several Geo-Science departments from colleges and universites from all over New England.

  5. Student Adventures: SEA Semester and Summer Seminars   (Speaker: Philip "PJ" Petrone)

This presentation by the Sea Education Association (SEA) in Woods Hole, MA will spotlight student adventures in oceanographic research and traditional sailing techniques on board the SSV Robert C. Seamans and SSV Corwith Cramer, 134-ft tall ships. SEA is the only academic program in the world to take undergraduates to sea under sail for six weeks as active members of the crew and to participate in oceanographic research. High school programs are available in the summer for college credit. You have not seen the world until you have seen it from the deck of a sailing vessel! Upcoming high school and college student voyages in the Atlantic, Caribbean and Pacific oceans will be discussed.

Morning Professional Hands-On Software Test Drives

Afternoon Professional Presentations

  1. Customized Geodatabase Development and ArcGIS Server Implementation at the
    University of New Hampshire

(Speakers: Tim Sullivan & Samuel Lingeman UNH Dept. of Energy and Campus Planning)

In 2002 the UNH Energy and Campus Development (ECD) GIS Group was created to manage the Universities' vast collection of campus infrastructure. Originally utilizing historical maps, CAD data, coverages, and shapefiles, ECD GIS began the task of creating a comprehensive, consolidated campus wide GIS. Today the ECD GIS group has evolved to include customized geodatabase development utilizing photo and video linking, the implementation of an enterprise GIS solution, and the creation of web mapping applications using ESRI's ArcGIS Server.

  2. Using CAD Data Inside the ArcGIS Environment  (Speaker: Shawn Herrick, Microdesk, Inc.)

This presentation is designed for those of us who have one foot in the CAD world and the other in the GIS world, but will be of interest to anyone who would like to use CAD files in an ArcGIS environment. The general theme will be the exchange of data between ESRI and Autodesk software packages. Demonstrations will include how CAD data is created, handled, and shared within ESRI's ArcGIS Desktop.

  3. Getting to Know Tele Atlas  (Speaker: Megan Albrecht, Tele Atlas)

This presentation will discuss data products available through Tele Atlas, detail the methods used to produce those products, and describe the wide variety of employees needed to make Tele Atlas run on all cylinders.

  4. Applied Cartography in ArcGIS 9.2  (Speakers: Johnathan Brook & Carl Nylen, ESRI)

Highlights of cartographic methods used to make useful, understandable and appealing maps in ArcGIS will be discussed. The presentation will cover concepts of classification, color theory, font and label usage and element placement.
